The New Works Project
We were inspired to start the New Works Project when our founders recognized that playwrights, as artists, continue to be underserved in our community. Although new plays are the singular, most valuable “raw material” for the sustainability of the theatre, no accessible program has existed locally offering consistent support and structure to local playwrights.
Realizing this fact, Michiana PlayMakers informally started the New Works Project in 2014 and has since produced four new plays as world premieres. These new plays were presented as either full productions or staged readings, all of which were written by local writers, performed by local talent, and presented to local audiences.
While each playwright’s needs are different, many have stated that they have difficulties in common:
1) Adhering to deadlines
2) Defining inconsistencies in the play
3) Evaluation of the work in general
4) Desire to hear the dialogue spoken
The objective of the New Works Project is to assist the playwright with a means to address these and other issues, and to provide the necessary resources and support required to bring the new work to the stage as a polished, finished, salable product. Because at the end of the day, it's all about making art.
If you are interested in submitting your work for consideration for 2020, or if you have questions about the project, please fill out the form to the right. We will respond as quickly as possible.
The New Works Project is made possible, in part, with the support from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County's ArtsEverywhere initiative.
